There’s a moment every December where your kids start to wonder if they actually made Santa’s Nice List this year. A nice list certificate is the easiest way to answer that question in the best way possible: an official looking piece of paper, straight from the North Pole, with their name on it.
I get it though. Between wrapping gifts, keeping the Elf moving, and just trying to survive December, adding one more thing to your list feels like a lot. This one takes about two minutes.
What Is a Nice List Certificate (And Why Kids Take It So Seriously)
An official nice list certificate is basically Santa’s paperwork made real. It has his signature, a gold seal, and a spot for your child’s name, so instead of just telling them they made the list, you can actually show them. Kids notice the difference. A certificate with “checked twice” printed right on it feels a lot more convincing than a verbal promise.
It also gives you, the parent, a fun prop to work with. You can build a whole little moment around it: reading it out loud at breakfast, taping it to the fridge, or slipping it somewhere your kids will find it on their own.
The Story Behind Santa’s Nice List (So You Can Actually Explain It)
The whole naughty or nice list tradition goes back generations, long before Elf on the Shelf turned it into a daily countdown. The idea has always been the same: good behavior gets noticed, and Santa keeps track. A nice list certificate just gives that idea something physical kids can hold onto.
When I started Print Joy Studio, this is exactly the kind of thing I wanted to make. Something simple, something that does not need a Pinterest worthy setup, but still makes the season feel a little more special. A nice list certificate does a lot of work for very little effort on your part.
If your family already plays along with the naughty or nice idea, you might enjoy testing how well everyone actually knows where they land. I put together a Naughty or Nice Quiz that is a fun way to get everyone talking before the certificates come out.
5 Fun Ways to Give Your Kids Their Nice List Certificate
You do not need a big production for this to land. Here are a few easy ways to work it into your Christmas lineup:
- Christmas Eve box: Slip it in as the last item they pull out, right before bed. If you are already planning out the rest of the evening, my Stress-Free Christmas Eve Activities post has more ideas to round out the night.
- Elf on the Shelf farewell note: Pair it with your elf’s goodbye letter before he heads back to the North Pole for the year. It makes his exit feel like part of something bigger.
- Christmas morning surprise: Leave it on the breakfast table next to the cookie crumbs Santa left behind, so it is the first thing they see.
- Stocking topper: Tuck it in on top of the small stuff, so it is the very first thing they pull out.
- Mailed from the North Pole: If you want to go the extra mile, address an envelope from Santa and drop it in the mail a few days before Christmas so it actually arrives with a postmark.
Blank vs Editable: Which Nice List Certificate Should You Print
This really comes down to how much time you have. The blank version is ready to write in by hand, which is nice if you want that personal, handwritten touch, especially if “Santa’s handwriting” is already a tradition in your house. The editable version lets you type the name and date directly into the PDF before you print, which is the better option if you are making one for more than one kid, or if handwriting neatly under pressure on December 23rd is not really your thing.
A few printing tips either way: use bright white cardstock so the gold seal and colors pop, and if you are handwriting the blank version, a gold or silver gel pen makes it look extra official. Both versions print at 8.5 x 11 inches, so there is no trimming or resizing to deal with.
Pair It With These Nice List Traditions
A nice list certificate works even better when it is part of something bigger instead of a standalone moment. A few ways to build on it: read it out loud like an official announcement before opening gifts, use it as the reason your elf can finally head home, or bring it up during family game night as a lighthearted “proof” the next time the naughty or nice debate comes up.
And if game night is already part of your Christmas plans, my Ultimate Guide to Printable Christmas Games has a full list of family-friendly options to keep everyone entertained well past the certificate reveal.
Make It Official This Year
The Nice List Certificate is up in my Etsy shop in three looks: classic red, a softer blue, and a candy cane stripe, so you can pick whichever one fits your Christmas. Each one comes with both a blank version and an editable version, so however you want to do it, you are covered.

Nice List Certificate FAQ
Do I need to print the certificate right away?
No. It is a digital download, so you can print it the moment you get it or save it and print closer to Christmas.
Can I make more than one for multiple kids?
Yes. The editable version makes this especially easy since you can type in a new name and date for each one before printing.
Does it work with our Elf on the Shelf tradition?
It pairs really well with an elf’s farewell note, since both moments feel like they are coming straight from the North Pole.
What size is the certificate?
It prints at 8.5 x 11 inches, landscape, so it fits a standard frame if you want to keep it as a keepsake.
A nice list certificate is such a small thing to add to your Christmas, but it is the kind of small thing kids remember. Let the fun begin!
Thanks again,
Dani
