Want to customize a gift for teacher this Christmas, but you don’t have an afternoon for glue and glitter? The easiest way is a fill-in card your child completes in their own words. No shopping trip, no craft supplies, and it’s the kind of gift teachers actually keep.

Here’s the quick version:

  • Short on time? Go with the full color card. Fill it in and it’s ready to give.
  • Have a kid who loves to color? The coloring card is the same card in black and white, so they can color it first.
  • Want an activity for a class party or a slow afternoon? The coloring page turns the whole thing into a Christmas craft.

Below you’ll find what’s on each one, what to write when your kid gets stuck, and a few tips for little ones who can’t write yet.

Why a Note From Your Kid Beats Another Mug

Ask teachers what they want for Christmas and a lot of them say the same thing: a note from their student. Not another mug. Not another candle. Teachers say they hang on to cards and drawings from students for years.

What makes a note stick is how specific it is. “You’re the best teacher” is sweet. “You let me read the dinosaur book at recess” is the one they keep in their desk drawer.

That’s exactly what a fill-in card does. The questions do the prompting, and your kid fills in the real, specific, slightly hilarious answers only they would think of.

The Full Color Card: Fill It In and You’re Done

This is the one for busy weeks. The card is already in full color, with red and green polka dot lettering, a “To My Teacher” banner, and little pictures next to each question. Your child fills it in and it’s ready to give.

Here’s what it asks:

  • You are a great teacher because…
  • If you were an elf, your name would be…
  • All teachers are on the nice list, but you’re on the extra nice list because…
  • My Christmas picture of you
  • My favorite thing about you is…
  • My Christmas wish for you

There’s also a To and From line at the top.

Best for: kids who’d rather write than color, and parents who need this done tonight. Get the full color Christmas teacher card here.

The Coloring Card: Color It, Then Fill It In

Same card, same six questions, but in black and white. Your child colors the title, the banner, and the little apple, elf hat, Santa, picture frame, heart, and gift drawings, then fills in their answers.

It takes a little longer, and that’s kind of the point. By the time they’re done, it’s clearly their card. Wobbly coloring and creative spelling included.

Best for: kids who love to color but still want it to look like a “real” card. Get the Christmas coloring card for teacher here.

The Coloring Page: A Christmas Activity That Doubles as a Gift

This one is laid out differently. Instead of boxes, each question sits inside a Christmas shape your child colors in:

  • Star: You are…
  • Gingerbread man: You are the best because…
  • Ornament: A picture of my teacher
  • Cloud: You helped me learn…
  • Santa hat: I hope Santa brings you…

There’s a blank banner at the top for the teacher’s name, “You are an awesome teacher” underneath, and a pencil at the bottom for the From line. Little doodles like stockings, gifts, and a Christmas tree fill in the gaps.

Best for: younger kids, daycare and preschool teachers, and anyone who wants a quiet activity that ends with a gift. Get the teacher Christmas coloring page here.

What to Write When Your Kid Gets Stuck

Blank stares happen. Here are a few starters for each question. Read them out loud, then let your kid run with whatever makes them giggle.

You are a great teacher because…

  • You make math feel like a game
  • You always notice when I’m sad
  • You read books in the funniest voices

If you were an elf, your name would be…
This is everyone’s favorite. Kids can make one up (Mrs. Jingle Pockets, anyone?), or you can use our free elf name generator to find their teacher’s official elf name together. 🎄

You’re on the extra nice list because…

  • You let us have a dance party on Fridays
  • You never lose your patience, even when we’re loud
  • You gave me a sticker when I finally got my spelling right

You helped me learn…

  • To read chapter books
  • My times tables
  • How to be a good friend

My Christmas wish for you / I hope Santa brings you…

  • A snow day
  • A class that always listens
  • A giant box of new markers

One tip: ask the question, then write down exactly what they say. The funny, specific answers are the ones teachers remember.

Tips for Little Ones Who Can’t Write Yet

Preschoolers and kindergarteners can absolutely give one of these. They just need a little help.

  • Let them tell you, then you write. Ask each question out loud and write their answer word for word, even if it’s a little random. That’s the charm.
  • Let them draw the answers. The picture spots are made for this, and a drawing counts as an answer anywhere on the page.
  • Have them write their own name. Even a wobbly first name on the From line makes it feel like theirs.
  • Split it up. Coloring one day and answers the next keeps it fun instead of feeling like homework.

Printing and Giving Tips

A few little things make this look extra special:

  • Print on white cardstock. It holds up to crayons and markers and feels sturdier in their hands.
  • Print extras. One for the classroom teacher, one for the aide, one for the music teacher. Mistakes happen too, and a fresh copy saves tears.
  • Roll it and tie it with ribbon. It looks like a little scroll and is easy for small hands to carry to school.
  • Pair it with something small. A gift card, a favorite coffee, or a pack of nice pens tucked inside turns it into a full gift. The card is what they’ll keep, though.

Pick Your Version and Print Tonight

All three are instant downloads, so you can print tonight and have it done before school tomorrow.

  • Full color Christmas teacher card: fill it in and give it
  • Christmas coloring card for teacher: color it, then fill it in
  • Teacher Christmas coloring page: a coloring activity that ends with a gift

FAQ

  1. What should a child write in a Christmas card for their teacher?
Something specific. A favorite thing they learned, a funny moment from class, or why they like their teacher. The prompts on these cards walk them through it, so they’re never staring at a blank page.
  2. Can my preschooler do this?
Yes. Write down their answers as they say them, and let them color and draw. The coloring page works especially well for little ones.
  3. How many copies can I print?
As many as your family needs for personal use. Print one for each of your child’s teachers, plus a few extras in case of mistakes.
  4. Is this a physical card?
No, it’s an instant digital download. You print it at home or at a print shop.
