So how did you do?

If you got Christmas Music Legend: you knew things in this quiz that most people have never thought about. That is not casual knowledge. That is dedication.

If you landed as Christmas Playlist Pro: you know your Christmas music well. The origin story questions may have tripped you up but the lyrics and artists were no problem. You are the person who puts the Christmas playlist on in November and does not apologize for it.

If you got Casual Holiday Listener: you know all the right songs. The deep cuts just need a bit more time. That is what repeat listens are for.

If you got Christmas Karaoke Newbie: you showed up, you sang loud, and that is honestly the most important thing. You now know things about Brenda Lee, Judy Garland, and the Catholic Church of Boston that most people do not. Consider it a win.

The question that trips up almost everyone? Who recorded Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree. Most people guess Mariah Carey. The answer is Brenda Lee, who was 13 years old at the time.

The stories behind the songs you thought you already knew

♪

Brenda Lee was 13 when she recorded Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree.

She recorded it in 1958 and it did not become a hit until two years later. It is now one of the best-selling Christmas singles of all time. She was in her mid-teens by the time people were actually listening to it.

♪

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas was almost unbearably sad.

The original 1944 lyric was: “Have yourself a merry little Christmas, it may be your last.” Judy Garland was filming Meet Me in St. Louis when she was handed the sheet music and she refused to sing it as written. The lyricist Hugh Martin rewrote it at her insistence. The version everyone knows and loves today only exists because Judy Garland put her foot down.

♪

Last Christmas has never been number one in the UK.

Wham! released it in 1984 and it was kept off the top spot by Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas, a charity single recorded by over 40 artists in a single day to raise money for Ethiopian famine relief. Last Christmas finally topped the charts in Germany and other European countries in 2019. Thirty-five years after its release.

♪

The Catholic Church in Boston banned I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus.

When 13-year-old Jimmy Boyd released the song in 1952, the Catholic Church in Boston objected that it made a mockery of the sacred figure of St. Nicholas. The ban did not slow it down. It sold over a million copies and became one of the biggest hits of the year.

Think you know your Christmas lyrics? This game will find out.

Taking this quiz by yourself is one thing. But if you want to take everything you just learned and turn it into a proper group game, the printable Christmas Finish the Lyrics game is the natural next step. Every question gives you the opening of a classic Christmas carol and you have to write how it continues. It is one of Print Joy Studio's most loved music games and a Star Seller pick with thousands of happy party hosts behind it. Here is how it works.

How to play Christmas Finish the Lyrics

The printable Christmas Finish the Lyrics game gives every player a sheet with the opening lines of 20 classic Christmas carols, each one trailing off with “…” right at the moment the lyric gets interesting. Players write in how each one continues.

Some feel completely obvious. Others will have people quietly humming to themselves, absolutely certain they know the words, until they try to write them down. That gap between “I know this song” and “I can actually recall the lyric” is where all the laughter comes from.

When everyone is done, go through the answers together as a group and tally up the scores at the bottom of each sheet. The player with the most correct answers wins.

A few things that make it land every time.

Play Christmas music in the background while everyone fills in their sheets. It helps and also definitely does not help, depending on the question.

Read the wrong answers out loud during the reveal. The confidently incorrect ones are funnier than the right answers.

Have a small prize ready for the winner. Even something small makes people take it more seriously than you would expect.

The download is instant. Print at home on regular paper or cardstock.

Prefer to play along while the music is actually on?

If sitting down for a structured trivia game is not quite the vibe, Christmas Songs Bingo is the move. Instead of answering questions, players match songs to their bingo card while a caller reads out lyrics or song titles. First to get five in a row wins.

There are three ways to play. Name That Tune: the caller reads a lyric out loud and players identify the song. Match the Song Title: the caller reads the song name directly for an easier version. Listen and Play: the caller plays a short clip of each song and players identify it by ear. You can also just let a Christmas playlist run in the background and players mark off songs as they come on. It turns the whole evening into a game without anyone having to host anything.

It works beautifully at family gatherings, office parties, and any event where you want everyone engaged without anyone feeling put on the spot.

More Christmas games to keep the night going

If you want to keep the party going past Christmas music, the 20 Christmas Games Bundle has you covered. It includes Christmas Song Trivia plus 19 other games across every format: Christmas Feud, Naughty or Nice, Most Likely To, Christmas Jeoparty, and more. One download, twenty games, zero scrambling the night before.

If your group already took the Christmas Trivia Quiz and wants something different, this one covers the music side of things. Pair them back to back and you have a full evening of Christmas knowledge battles.

And if you want to end the night with something more personal and a little chaotic, the Naughty or Nice Quiz is a great closer. Ten questions that reveal where everyone actually lands on Santa's list. No right or wrong answers. Just the truth coming out.

Want the full picture of everything available? The printable Christmas games guide walks through every game with tips on which ones fit your group.

One last thing

You knew the songs. Now you know the stories behind them. Brenda Lee was 13. Judy Garland put her foot down. Last Christmas never got to number one. The Catholic Church got involved. Christmas music is genuinely more interesting than most people realize.

Take the quiz one more time if you want to improve your score. Then grab the Christmas Song Trivia game and find out which one of your people has been secretly harboring this knowledge all along.

Happy hosting.
